Giving Your Natural Hair a Facelift

This is the third installment of Kayla’s Quick Reads, a series of blog posts designed to be read from top to bottom in 5 minutes or less.

I've been so frustrated with my hair over the last couple of months and I finally realized that I was in desperate need of some shape!  My hair was so one dimensional and flat and just blah overall.  So I recently got my hair cut at the Diaspora Salon in Baltimore, MD and the experience was a dream!  When I booked my Curly Cut appointment online I also completed their online consultation, which is just a set of questions that helps them get a better understanding of your hair habits and a good idea of the look you’re going for.  Upon my arrival, the stylist looked at my hair and asked me again what kind of shape I wanted.  She cut my hair dry and in its curly state (I arrived with it in a wash and go), shampooed and conditioned, and styled my hair in a wash and go again.  Throughout the entire process, she told me exactly what she was doing and what products she was using.  What I loved most about the experience was the fact that they are invested in hair like mine.  The only tool she ever used on my hair was shears for the cut.  She took her time, finger detangling my hair and double checking to make sure that I approved of what she was doing.  Not to mention that the salon itself is a black girl magic haven.

So if you’re in the DC Metropolitan area and interested in a salon that specializes in kinky, curly, and wavy hair, definitely give them a try!  Here are some reasons why you might want to give your hair a bit of a facelift:

Say goodbye to the push, pull, fluff, and pin

I had this problem, and I think many naturals do when their hair grows out of a cut or lacks shape. You style your hair and have to tuck a piece there, pull a piece here, fluff in the top, and pin back in the front, all to basically create a shape!  Why do all that when you could just get it cut into the shape you like?

More defined and manageable curls

When you cut off excess hair or dead ends, the remaining hair is rejuvenated.  The curls pop more, and you’ll probably find that your hair is more manageable too.

It’s fun

Of course, any kind of change to your hair or look in general should be fun!  It’s fun to switch things up a bit, and shaping your hair a little differently is a nice change without having to do anything too drastic.
